I had several birth defects when I made the mistake of using Cod Liver Oil in one litter. It was the only time I had given it to a bitch that was pregnant and the only time I have had birth defects.....intestines on the outside, huge rear dew claws, open fontanel, and a puppy who lived only a short time. The puppy seemed to be normal but just did not make it. I don't know if he had internal problems. I will NEVER give Cod Liver Oil again during the first part of pregnancy. I give just a little during the last week when mom is about ready to deliver and is making milk. I would not want anyone to have these problems in a litter.
My vet was wonderful as she met me on Sunday afternoon to put the little one who was born with the intestines on the outside to sleep. I know some of you have had success saving a little one in this condition but she felt he would suffer and then would not make it. I did not want to let him go through that. I had two healthy girls and it was the boys with the problems. The little boy with the open fonanel turned out to be fine and was quite normal but I was real concerned for several weeks because he did have a strange look about him. I knew something was wrong. I am very careful to make sure my pregnant girls don't get Cod Liver Oil .
