Dear List-

As a follow-up to my request last week for any ideas on what would cause a
dog to exhibit lameness in the rear end along with lethargy, a big THANK YOU.
I did mention that a flea and tick collar had just been placed on this
particular Cavalier as well as the other Cavalier that she lived with. And,
of course, this 10-month old tricolor girl had proceeded to chew off the
other's collar, perhaps ingesting a portion of it.

After receiving a few replies from those on this list who had had similar
symptoms when they had used flea collars, and after reading a few articles
that I found on the Internet describing the dangers (especially to young
children) of the organophosphates in these flea products, I immediately
called this little girl's owner and told her to get to the vet immediately
and have them focus on the collar being the cause of her symptoms (which had
worsened to the point of seizures). Since she already had an appointment
that evening with a neurologist, she went in and asked them to focus on
possible poisoning from the flea collar. Which they did. By morning, her
little girl was back to about 90% of her old self, and the owner's fears of
losing her girl were fading. She confessed that her regular vet had not a
clue as to what else to do, and they really thought that she was not going to
make it.

So again, thanks to all that helped to make a difference which resulted in to
a very happy ending!
