Here is some information concerning the recent postings about virus problems.
The Klez virus will spoof the "From:" address so that you cannot tell where it really originated. It searched through an infected computer and finds email addresses and then creates messages that appear to come from those innocent senders. The virus keeps reappearing and we should all take measures to check and protect our computers. First, and most important, you MUST ensure that your email program and your web browser program are blocking the viruses. This is accomplished by two methods: use of a virus blocking program, and upgrading your browser and mail reader with the latest patches from the vendor (Microsoft, AOL, etc). If you are using Microsoft products, visit Microsoft.com for the latest patches and service packs. The service packs for Outlook, Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer are quite effective in blocking viruses. Click on the Help menu of whatever program you are running, and then choose "About" to learn which version you are running. Second, consider using a virus protection package from Norton or McAfee. These packages are effective if they are kept up to date. Note that they can cause problems when installing some software packages, so you may need to disable them at some point. Last, keep informed about virus issues. There are numerous sites that report on virus threats and also virus hoaxes. Don't fall for the hoaxes that tell you to delete some file from your computer! Frankly, this type of hoax can cause more harm than real viruses! An amazing number of people fall victim to these hoaxes. Here are some resources: A free online virus check -- this site will scan your computer for any virus infection. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp A specific scanning and disinfecting program for the Klez virus: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.removal.tool.html Information on virus (and other) hoaxes: http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/ http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/hoaxes/hoax.asp To check on any potential hoax, or "advice" that comes in an email, just do a search on the key words. I recommend using Google for the search: http://www.google.com Feel free to email me directly if you have specific questions. Please provide details about which version of Windows you are using, along with your email and browser details. I cannot help you with ANY questions that involve AOL or Macintosh.
