Yes they can, Pam - for 30 days - then you can apply for an extension to continue showing them -
Check out the AKC site - they can send you whatever you need to get the imported dog registered / what the rules are, etc. I was told that any import had to be shown in Open only - but the information they sent me didn't say that - and AKC hasn't contacted me about the points Justine earned in the puppy class while her paperwork was being processed <grin> Hopefully they won't Good luck!
