Sheena, I let mom wean the puppies. I put food down for them to "play in" at 4 weeks. As they begin to eat more they need mom less. Some of my moms wean earlier than others. When she starts trying to get away from them I know its time to remove her from the pups for periods of time. She usually doesn't want to be away for too long, but does seem to enjoy "adult cavalier conversation and company" for short periods of time.
