I just wanted to make a comment on this. We have a Golden (rescue) who came to us as a very excitable, energetic 2 year old. The thing that works best for him is if I *whisper* "ssshhhh" to him. I found, by trial and error, that using a normal tone had no effect on him at all, and raising my voice just got him more excited. But whispering calms him immediately. Might be worth a try if other things aren't working.
