        I, too, speculate on this one.  I have had and shown both sorts of
temperament and it shocked me that the nervous, excited, "can't wait to
get this over with" exhibit was adored by the judges, while with the
calm, workmanlike, quietly wag-your-tail kinda guy we get told that
"he's unhappy".  He's NOT unhappy, he is not shutting down or any other
euphamism for "shy"......he approaches the judge (and anyone else who
may be in the vicinity) to greet them and wag his tail.  He just dosen't
  charge around nervously.  He is workmanlike and relaxed about it all.
  That doesn't get him attention..........

I think there are a VERY few exhibits who are calm AND "strut their
stuff".  However, I think a good number of the "showy" dogs are nervous
and want to get out of there! <G>
