My 2 1/2 yr. old Millie has been diagnosed with Liver disease and a Pancreas that was effected also. She had not been eating well and lost a good bit of weight. I ask the Vet for a complete blood count to be done on both Millie and Chloe since they were taking blood for heartworm checks....this was in mid June.....they told me both were normal.. since then Millie's appetite had plummeted.....I bought many different kinds of dogfood...and finally called the Vet to get Millie back in....I knew she had lost weight..they put me off again...so I found a new Veterinarian.....thank God.... and as it turns out Millie's blood work was not normal she was jaundice at the time and had some other lab values that were not normal.....my new Vet ran a complete set of blood work, X-rays and got me into a wonderful Clinic in Cincinnati. Millie had a Liver Biopsy and exploratory surgery about 12 days ago. She is on Clavamox for at least a month and they started her on Predisone for just a short time. Her appetite has improved and is back to normal..she has gained a 1 lb. I think the antibiotics have really done the trick. She starting eating 2 days after the antibiotics.
Her biopsy did not show any necrosis or scirrosis which is good! So this was not a poisoning, but more of a chronic type (Non-bacterial) Hepatitis. The Biopsy showed sterile inflammation of the Liver cells and also a Pancreas that looked small with atrophy. She does not have bad glucose levels, so diabetes has been ruled out. They suspect this is a immune system problem...and we are just waiting to see how the steroids effect her. So far the plan is to do another Bile acids test (do a fasting blood draw,- feed the animal so many cc's of high fat concentrated "food" and redraw 2 hrs. after ingestion to get a idea of how the Liver is processing the fat.) This seems to be a wait and see kind of process and if anyone has any information about Liver Problems, Pancreas...or steroids please let me know....I know there are lots of pros and cons using steroids ...but it does seem that if the liver shows inflammation a short bout of steroids might turn this around.
