If anyone is wondering why I ended up judging Cavalier bitches at Builth Wells instead of Michael Boothroyd it was because at the last moment Michael had to pull out because of illness. I went along as a spectator to watch the judging and was looking forward to a nice leisurely couple of days in Wales. I had a phone call late Thursday night from the society's secretary to ask if I was willing to take on Michael's entry of bitches the following day as he was incapacitated. I am sure everyone that entered under Michael must have been disappointed that he wasn't there and equally Michael himself would have been looking forward to the occasion especially as between them Gordon and Michael had drawn the top entry for the whole show, 277 Cavaliers. Golden Retrievers normally beat Cavaliers into this position. So it was a last moment change and unavoidable. I was pleased that no one decided to withdraw their entry and thank the exhibitors in the sporting way they seemed to accept the change of judge, although I am sure that there were no doubt moans and groans from some areas!!
Well done to all those placed. Jocelyn Inman (Reserve Bitch CC) and Maurene Milton (Reserve Dog CC) are well established breeders/exhibitors and have had a long string of deserving successes and know the thrill of winning at that level but on the day the CCs went to first timers Andy Shone (Bitch CC) and Peter and Ruta Towse (Dog CC) and it was refreshing to see their sheer delight and disbelief. Nothing is quite the same after that first major win and no matter how many CCs you win that first one is always special and the feeling experienced is never repeated. So savour it! I wish Michael a speedy recovery and lets hope he isn't too dismayed at my choices! I daresay I will hear from him soon!
