A couple of things I recently learned about alarm systems. 1. Ask about installing "glass breaks". If someone breaks the glass on your window and enters your home through that still closed but broken window your alarm will not be activated because the hard wired connection will not have been broken by someone opening the window.
2. Smoke alarms and heat sensors can also be hooked into your alarm system and be programmed to automatically call the fire department. 3. Make sure you have a silent "panic code" in case someone forces you into your home and tells you to disarm your alarm. This should be a differend code than you use to disarm your alarm but when you punch it in it will make the alarm look as if it has been disarmed but will immediately dispatch the police. 4. There are sirens that do have volume controls that you can place inside of your home so you don't deafen your dogs. 5. You can also get a monitoring system where a voice will speak everytime a window or door is opened and tell you the location of that window/door. For example "basement door open"..."garage door open". This feature is particularly useful when you are trying to set the alarm and the status light is blinking to let you know that something is open but you don't know what. You can use the monitor to tell you what is not closed without having to check everything in the house. This feature can also be turned off. 6. Ask about getting a cellular backup placed in your attic. If someone cuts your phone line before breaking into your house, your system can't call anyone. With a cellular backup as soon as the phone lines are disrupted the cellular backup phone will notify central station. 7. Dogs will set off motion detectors but depending on where you leave your dogs when you are out and where your dogs sleep you can place the motion sensors in places where the dogs won't trip them. This is all I can think of right now...hope this helps.
