Hi, List,
I received an email which is going around which I found very disturbing.
My name must be in some address books from the list, and likely some
of you have received the same email. This email was a very well written
piece of propaganda signed by an ex-marine. It endorsed "defeating the
enemy", "living free or not at all" and such sentiment.

I must say that this piece is a well written argument. However, I did
find it a bit disturbing to have it arrive in my email. I happen to
have lost family in the 9/11 incident, and yet I don't seem to have the
bloodlust for revenge that some seem to think is synonymous with patriotism.

I think it makes us the same as those who attacked us. I think we are
in danger of NOT having a world of any sort to leave behind to our children.

Please consider that strident opinion like this IS going everywhere on
the internet and that some of us find it NOT DISSIMILAR to the sort of
propaganda that gets distributed by our enemies.

It worries me to see propaganda of any sort pumping public sentiment for
a war in which they cannot possibly know the outcome or even sort out
the reasons.

There just is no getting around the fact that war is hell no matter for
what cause it is waged. I have also two sons; I wish to leave a world
behind for them.

I'm a very independent thinker; don't endorse any particular view and am
not on any "team". So, it bothers me when I see mail like this
streaming into my inbox and think of the knee jerk response of others to
endorse it blindly and forward it onward lest they be thought less
patriotic for not so doing.

I happen to also have had a top secret clearance at one time in my life
when working for a government weapons manufacturer, and am aware of how
the government contractors who wish to make money (of course) assist in
the effort to pump up Americans for actions which involve more
production of their product(s). It is relatively easy to incite ex
soldiers to emoting such stuff on behalf of these "products". (Here I am
talking about nuclear weapons which is the "product" that my ex-company
produced along with many other harmless ones.)

I suppose this one just jolted me to reply, as I'm fearful that
emotional public sentiment fueled by happy well heeled government
contractors will begin a war that can't be stopped. I'm not adverse to
certain actions to take out terrorists, but I think the "them or us"
kind of thinking is very dangerous and very similar to what is being
said BY them to THEIR countrymen.

I hope that this has not offended any of you. It is rare that I reply
to any mass mailing, but this seems so inflammatory that I'm hoping not
to see it it my email again.

Thanks for listening.

Suze
