It is with great sadness that my first personal posting on this list is the
result of encountering a Cavalier puppy in a local San Antonio pet store.
After a bit of research I learned the store in question, Petland, is actually
a franchised chain that has a national reputation among rescue organizations
for buying from puppymills.

The puppy is a male bred by someone named Tomma Person in Oklahoma, and he is
being sold with open papers. I was told the puppy was 10 weeks of age, but
he seemed extremely small and appeared to be no more than 7 or 8 weeks of
age. The fact that the store is clean, their staff is friendly, and the
puppy appeared happy does not change the fact that his origins are of a
dubious nature.

I can only hope that this puppy will be sold to a loving family that has no
interest in breeding, as the store owner made it clear to me that his only
concern is a return on his investment. It broke my heart, but I realize that
rescue dollars spent here would only result in teaching the store owner that
there are Cavalier lovers out there willing to pay to get these dogs out of
his store.

Thank you to those I spoke with this evening who listened, shared my sadness
and anger, and who provided me with advice as to how to proceed. I will not
spend one more dollar in any Petland store.
