Hi all, I liked Lucie's suggestion of obtaining an international money order through the UlS. Postal Sevice rather than paying the stiff rates that the banks impose on checks made out in British Sterling. I just got off the phone from speaking with the folks at the Post Office and unfortunately they do not offer international money orders to go to the U.K. (apparently they do offer them for some countries). Just thought I'd share this --- international money orders are a great idea, but not an option when dealing with the U.K. :(
