Hi Gang:

I would like to present an interesting discussion
to this list. Penn Hip assessment. Penn Hip
assessments were developed as a result of problems
with OFA assessment. The problem with OFA is that the
readings of OFA x-rays are highly subjective.
Independent variables such as the time the x-rays are
read, the background of the reader (i.e. a
radiologist without much experience), how many are
being read at one time can greatly affect the
interpretation of the x-ray. This is well documented.
I don't think any serious person would disagree with
this criticism. The reliabilty among readers of the
same hip x-ray is not very high.

I had a discussion today with one of the top
veterinary radiologist in the country regarding Penn
Hip. This radiologist was less than enthusiastic
about Penn hips. Her concerns were two fold: First,
there is an assumption with Penn hips that there is a
one to one correlation between luxicity of the hips
and dysplasia. This assumption is false. Second,
there is not enough data within breeds to make
accurate assessments.

I am curious to know what people on the list think
of Penn Hips.
