It's very common for horses -- in fact required for certain venues. A number
is "branded" on the neck where the mane falls and covers it.  They use
liquid nitrogen. Have you ever had a wart or papilloma "frozen"? Same thing.
It burns a little.

Subjecting dogs to pain/mutilation for the sake of human vanity (so the dog
"looks better" to a judge or to other people) is wanton cruelty. There's
no,excuse for it.
