Hi, Laura,
I've heard it said, and I do believe that hip displasia in small/toy
breed dogs is not as painful, crippling or difficult to manage as it is
in medium to large dogs. I have heard vet after vet say this to me.
Weight bearing is one of the variables which they mention again and
again. I've also been told by breeders that "some of the best moving
Cavaliers in the ring" have hip displasia. Well?
So, WHILE I AM NOT SAYING that one should not do hips (I do them!), nor
am I saying that hip displasia cannot get to be severe and painful in
Cavaliers and cause quality of life problems, I am saying that I think
it is far different in our breed than in larger dogs.
I feel as though I've done my job if I test eyes on all pups, they all
get vet exams and all breeding animals are tested for hearts, hips, eyes
and checked for patellar luxation.
Just my personal take on this.
Best,
Suze
