Hello Mark,

M> Ok heremy 2 cents:

M> The sourcemashine is a LINUX which is infected and the target mashine is an
M> oBSD with compat_linux in the kernel.
M> So let's think about this situation..

yes, lets start to think for a change

M> We will take the worst case: All copies of the file are infected on the
M> sourcemashine. Sourcemashine hasn't an AV.
M> So now my "friend" tux sends me a mail with the file. My Clam-AV detects
M> "Hey this file is very very suspect. It's infected with
M> unix.take_more_then_2_seconds_to_think_about_a_topic.worm".
M> So what should my friend do?

He should wonder how on earth he could be so mindless to execute a file that
he didnt know about - this is the behaviour of the average windows-user and
even they get smarter.A virusscanner is just a tool, it cant replace common sense
- not now, but we all wait for an update...

M> Should he delete the file and all copies?
M> And then? He has to reinstall the OS couse ClamAV wa snot able to clean it.

I think you didnt get the meaning of ClamAV. The goal wasnt a second f-prot
or KAV (i think). Just read http://clamav.elektrapro.com/doc/html/node2.html

M> What's if the file is very importend?

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=backup

M> Or another example like the first one:
M> Both Computer use Clam-AV but the virus/worm is only detecable after the
M> last update of the virii-db.
M> So what should I and "tux" do know?

In this case you BOTH should wonder how on earth you could
be so mindless to execute a file that you didnt know about.

M> If ClamAV will not be able to clean the system/file in the next versions
M> it's completly senseless for the mass.

http://clamav.elektrapro.com/doc/html/node2.html

M> If I've to buy Kaspersky for *NIX I dosn't need ClamAV and if I've Kaspersky
M> I will send new viruses to Kaspersky and NOT to clamAV couse Kaspersky found
M> mostly ways to clean a file.

you realy know how to punish people...*yawn*
to me it seems you didnt get the meaning of this project.
maybe you should read and think a bit more. but maybe im just wrong. who knows...

>> Antony.
>> Windows: just another pane in the glass.
>> Please reply to the
M> list;
>> please don't CC
M> me.

M> Just an idiot..sorry...
you forgot 3 letters.

M> In my archive there also LINUX-Virii and Worms...
M> And much of them will not deteced by ClamAV.

Not yet. But it stops Swen, Sobig, Sober and many other.
Who said the development is finished yet ?

M> For me personly it's senseless to send parts of my archive to ClamAV when
M> ClamAV is not be able to clean the file.

http://clamav.elektrapro.com/doc/html/node2.html

M> I wrote an mail to the developers of ClamAV (compare my archive with the
M> archive of the developers..) but I dosn't get a response.
M> That's proof enough for me and it shows me how much some people care about a
M> full functional VirusDB.

which means you missed a chance to complete your collection a bit more?
the meaning of open source is to share knowledge wit a community, what
you are looking for is a chance to trade files - just the wrong place
i guess.

M> Don't misunderstand me I love OpenSource and I respect the work of the team
M> of ClamAV!
M> Yes I do! And I would spend my complete Archive if ClamAV is able to clean
M> anything...

do you have any idea how complex this is?

M> But so I wanna trade (only) with the developers and I think it's fair.
M> But it seams that they wont even if they could.

M> Old school virus-coding rocks couse the old "school boys" (which codes for
M> C64, Apple2 and so on) are coding without a mass-destruction-instruction
M> into the virus/worm ...
M> So it was... long time ago, here in my country.

yes. and?

M> mfg. Mark (aka Rembrandt..)
