Thanks for your replies. To clarify, in my application the data doesn't need to reach the filesystem at all; it goes straight into a database. So yes I could put it in /tmp and invoke clamdscan, but I see enough security patches marked "insecure temporary file creation" already!
I think I will go ahead and write the C socket code. I'll let you know how I get on.
