1. I had a fresh installation and had thrown away the old config  
files, then uncommented the example line as recommended
2. I used nano to edit the conf to avoid surprises, as well used an  
alternative editor as a test

ssh with
1. Terminal OS X
2. cross checked with vncserver / kdesktop terminal directly on the  
server - same result.

Yes, I have worked with a fresh config files after having deleted both  
clamd.conf and freshclam.conf .
The only changes (commenting out the example line) have been done with  
nano

The mangled output was consistent - so every time it came up with like  
"Name or service not knownion about database.clamav.net"
