It should be the cure, that's why so many security products use a shield. The ClamWin logo is a clam that looks like a shield. That makes sense. The logo (in general ) and images on the current homepage are telling people clamav is malicious, clamav is the monster.
Not everyone considers demons and devils to be the villains in mythology. Some of us consider them to be underdog heroes against oppressive overlords.
OTOH, a purveyor of malware might consider an AV to be the villain to his business.
