"When we get support issues with any AV product, we typically say
'uninstall what you have, and put Symantec on.'"

This is becoming an increasingly unrealistic option for us. It was
certainly fine in an era when few computers showed up with AV tools
installed. But good work at increasing awareness of the importance of AV
software means more students are arriving with pre-purchased (and
pre-subscribed) software, and telling students the $100 they spent on a
year's subscription isn't going to be used leads to frustration.

Using the campus-purchased SAVCE is very much a last, worst option for
us.

Subject: Re: [CLEANACCESS] Host Security Policy - deciding which clients
to support

Tim,

We decided at Heidelberg to support this list of 4 products for the
reasons shown:

1) Symantec (because we license it for everyone -- no additional cost to
students)
2) AVG (because it's free -- no complaints about the cost)
3) McAfee -- because we find that many students have it (came with the
computer, at least to start)
4) TrendMicro -- because we find that some students come with it

Given those 4, we haven't felt obliged to support the plethora of
alternatives. When we get support issues with any AV product, we
typically say "uninstall what you have, and put Symantec on."

Are other organizations limiting the number of AV clients that they are
supporting? If so, how did you go about choosing which AV clients to
support? How many AV clients are you supporting? Are some AV clients
leading to more headaches than others? Did you receive criticism for
not supporting AV clients that were already purchased by students? Any
recommendations are greatly appreciated.
