An increasing number of organisations use emission reductions sourced through JI/CDM-type arrangements to neutralize climate impacts associated with their operations and products.
Operating outside Kyoto commitments, this market offers a range of interesting opportunities for additional climate protection, consumer participation as well as challenges.
Current market participants use a broad variety of arrangements and qualities of emission reductions to deliver the climate impact neutrality claim: some engage only in credits generated from CDM / JI projects, others use certificates outside the Kyoto mechanisms. Challenges include the hedging of reputational risks that impact the confidence of potential mainstream users in the integrity of the climate impact neutrality claim.
Especially on the voluntary market, CDM projects with high additional sustainability benefits have an enormous potential. Opportunities also exist in relation to the financing of beneficial projects that otherwise “do not make it” as CDM projects, i.e. because of their size or other reasons.
The objective of the meeting is to introduce the instrument of voluntary carbon offsetting to the interested public and stakeholders to inspire participation, discuss market development and critical issues for market expansion.
