Are monads all that special? My understanding is that even in Haskell its wise to not use monads all that much, since it starts to make the code look a little too imperative if not wielded correctly. They're not really the meat of haskell/fp. Macros on the other hand are an important part of lisp, although their overuse is also discouraged :)
