There definitely isn't a *need* to clone or checkout steps, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a clean slate at each stage (especially considering at this time pedestal-app errors can be kind of opaque–we're working on that).
WRT GitHub issues vs. Mailing lists – it's my personal preference to do things over GitHub.
