When I started learning clojure back in 2010 I decided to give a presentation about it at work. That set a deadline (about 3 months) in which I had to learn the language. Having said that, I learnt /the language/ however wroting code (toy or not) reading other people's code, getting code reviews (asking for reviews of short snippets in IRC has been great) has been invaluable.
