a few days ago i helped some friends with an old computer with w2k
where the power-supply "burnt out"

they bought a new computer, we installed linux on the new hard-disk,
but they needed some programs to run from the old disk

putting the old disk in the new computer gave an "inaccessible boot device",
after that, i made an image of the old disk with clonezilla, and made
that work
inside virtualbox

that new setup also gave an "inaccessible boot device",
then after trying some recovery console option, i decided to use the
"repair mode" of the w2k installation cdrom, that didn't take so long,
and ... the virtual "old disk" was booting inside virtualbox (inside linux)

my friends were happy,
i don't know whether xp-installation-cdrom has a repair option,
but i assume it does, you could try the same
