thank you for the suggestions.  i did try 1.2.3-23 and obtained similar
results, except that the repeating messages included an error like
"unable to access /dev/sda".  i attempted to try 20091230-karmic but it
was just a bit too large to fit on to the stick.  i tried a different,
2.0 GB stick with 1.2.2-31 and it booted fine and i was able to start
clonezilla.

it would be nice if i could get the 128 MB stick to work.  is it
possible?  what kind of information is needed to find out?
