I know that "the destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one". But if it isn't true, Clonezilla does not print any error message (that can help you).
I'm using an old release of Clonezilla (1.2.1-17) but perhaps this problem affects also the latest version. In my case Clonezilla completes immediatly the operation but without writing anything (it only corrupts the partition).
