The idea is simple - to have fixes and features self-contained in their own branch. Meaning, if you port IndexWriter tests for example, then have them all in their own branch with the fixes you found by them. You get to choose what can be self-contained and what is not, but just keep the general idea in mind. This should result in smaller branches, but obviously sometimes they'll grow big anyway...
