Yes - one that is tracking master. Use that same branch as long as you're working on the same issue, and when you start working on anything else that is self contained start a new branch tracking master. Its easy to see what has changed between the branches - and I suspect one of the conflict resolutions during merges was incorrect. Don't forget to remove your old branches when they are not needed anymore!
