Here's a few ideas you can try out: 
 
1) There are a number of java applets on the web that will connect you to irc. 
I'm not sure if this would get you past your firewall but it's worth a try. 
 
2) If you have access to port 22, then setup ssh on your home machine, then ssh 
in and use BitchX to connect to irc. 
 
3) I don't know what you do, but tell your sys. admin that you need help with 
something and that there is an irc channel devoted to that topic. Then maybe he 
will give you access.
