About 1-2 years ago I tried to install Red Hat 6.2 and 7.1 on a P133
with 2Gb HDD and about 50mb RAM hoping to get some sort of server going
and to try Linux out. Reguardless of what settings I've set,
(workstation, server, custom) some problem comes up in the
installation. The installation GUI changes odd colours, (problably the
low end video-card,) or the installation freezes when installing
packages. I made sure that the installation was well under 2Gb and read
up on the Red Hat installation manual with no success. I grew tired of
the problems and dropped the project.
Recently I've offered a friend to re-format his computer, (his Win98
wasn't able to boot up anymore,) and I took the PIII 500 to my place,
backed up the 13Gb HDD thought, why don't I try Red Hat again. I've
since downloaded RH7.2, (about 6 months ago,) and was itching to try
it. I popped the CD in and tried the install. Once again the
installation freezes while installing the packages, (namely BASH,) I
was thinking the CD was dirty so I cleaned the CD and tried again.
FREEZE!!! I am still able to move the mouse but nothing works. I dig
up my RH7.1 thinking that this would help and tried to install that.
Once again the computer froze and wasn't able to finish installation.
I still have my P133 and want to get it up and running with Linux,
(when I have time,) but I cringe at the thought of the installation
problems.
My background is: I've used Linux for several years at school as an
user but haven't done any administrating on Linux. So the user friendly
installation is desired, (however the text mode I can handle.)
Now my questions are:
1. Why would this happen?
2. Is this Red Hat specific?
2a. I've heard that Mandrake is most user friendly but lacks in the
server area and FreeBSD, (if I remember correctly,) is the most
configurable but diffcultto install and Red Hat is in between. Is this
true? Or is any favor basically the same?
3. How do I get around this installation problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
