Not necessarily. Only if you have limited space.

mount -o loop mybackup.img /mnt/temp

Now I have random access to my backup. Something I can't do with tape.

If the backup is written to cd (or old hard disk). Space is no longer an issue.

mount /mnt/cdrom (you may have to tell mount what file system was used if 
not iso9660 or juliet.)
