I thought I'd weigh in, since I currently carry an LPI certification.
The LPI levels try to cover a wide degree of knowledge. Level one is
pretty basic, on par with most entry-level certifications (so I hear).
Level two is much more involved, I doubt *anyone* could get away with
reading the objectives only. Level three is unfinished, but it's more
variable than the others; you can get it by writing two exams out of a
pool of five-ish exams, while the other two don't give any options.
A couple of things attracted me to LPI. I can't afford a RHCE, and
LPIC was the next toughest cert I could find. The exams are also pretty
cheap, on par with A+. LPI has been pretty good at keeping their exams
up-to-date; I don't think Level 1 has been available for two years yet,
but they've already got a revision in beta for it.
