I doubt it. I remember when it was originally announced, and there were several news sites all reporting the same thing. (/., The Reg, ZDnet, etc)
More likely the story changed as it was retold (from memory). The current proliferation of virus hoaxes proves people don't check facts, and in fact, don't even really think for themselves most of the time. "this file can't be detected by Norton, etc.."
