Though Linux still isn't perfect in this regard, I can't just go about moving apps to where ever I want, especially if it's used by another program, without changing some sort of config afterwards. This is not always a big deal though, but I do prefer the idea of the all archive dir-ish as used by NeXTstep, GNUstep, OSX. In this scenario an app and all it's non-standard required libs, and it's icons, and other files it might need, plus binaries for all supported architecture go into a special .app directory and all those support files are stored logically in there. But from the file manager, it appears to the user as just one file, which can be placed anywhere at will without the need to change anything else.
