Providing a list of running processes and memory/CPU load would help. Try tunning top and see which process uses up most of your CPU cycles...

Mandrake does come with gozzilion of programs you never use that may run and chew up your cycles. Try to use light weight WM as the other fella suggested or maybe try a light weight distro for lower end hardware. Debian could run nicely on such hardware...

In any event, provide some stats for comparison and reference on your system...

Hi and good day to you all,

Is Mandrake 9.0 meant to run slow on celerons?
Have a celeron 800 with 128M of ram, good size hard drive.

It runs very slow - I've done three different installation choosing three
diffent options "standard, expert, etc" but the same thing. I installed the
i586 distribution.

Should I have used the i386 distribution? I wanted to try Mandrake 9.0 and
there was no i386 that I could find.

Your opinion would be appreciated.

Raf.
