the double posting thing is a red herring: it would be trivial to keep posts

all of which can (and are) asked about on this list. by using a web forum for
it you simply spread out the questions among a couple dozen forums, each of
which would then have to be visited to see what the conversation is rather
than looking in one folder of my email client.
email clients do offer filtering and threading.

those "other sites" out there have far more people who are helpful. as for
offering local help, well, we do that right here on this list.
