Yes the USSR was the first into space but that is because of the space race.
Here's a little history:
1) USSR launches Sputnic the first man made satallite.
Sputnic wasn't a satellite.
Skylab was the first space station and was built by NASA. As S�bastien stated, Mir was the first "permanent" station. Skylab was designed for temporary station.2) USSR launches Mir the first space station
Well China has a thriving Space program. I believe they are even planning a moon mission.3) USSR dies Why because �communism doesn't work�. In order to develop interstellar travel you have to be around long enough to develop it.
