Richie mentioned a couple ways to run apps on a local session, but display 
managers can help enable running the entire shebang (window manager, apps... 
everything above the X Server) remotely and they have quite a few cool 
features and are often one of the less obvious things to set up...

you can even run the display manage remotely, of course ;-)
