Xfree86 for Cygwin has been around for a couple years. It was only this year where the XFree86 packages were added to the cygwin setup program (You use to have to download XFree86 separately from xfree86.cygwin.com).
Now with that said, I have used commercial X servers. When I first tried remote displaying Gnome and KDE I found that the commercial products had a tendency to crash frequently. XFree86/Cygwin seem far more stable (Maybe the commercial programs after a few years have improved, but XFree86's price is right, and it does the job very well). On a side note there use to be a version of KDE that ran natively under Windows/Cygwin/Xfree86 (KDE 2.2 I think). It was only a beta product and it was buggy, but it was an interesting attempt to put KDE on Windows. Not sure if that project is still active.
