Hello all,

I think this is a very exciting time for Linux on the desktop, and I
would like to share some of the things that I think are important with
the group.
We are on the verge of the two major Linux desktops releasing the first
.x release to their latest major desktop revisions. As Aaron said
recently, KDE will release version 3.1 of their desktop environment very
soon. The latest release is 3.1RC6 and you can check it out at
http://www.kde.org/info/3.1.html
The Gnome project is also very close to releasing version 2.2 of their
desktop, and it looks like there are some very cool new features in
development. The latest release is 2.1.5 and you can check it out at
http://www.gnome.org/start/2.1/
Some other smaller desktops have also been very busy lately. My
favorite window manager turned desktop shell Enlightenment has finally
released some news about their development work on E17. There is no
release date yet, but at least we know they are doing something :-). You
can check out the latest happenings at
http://www.enlightenment.org/pages/news.html
The XFCE project is also hard at work at version 4 of their desktop
environment. Some new screenshots have recently been released and you
can check them out at http://members.home.nl/jbhuijsmans/screenshots/
and you can get more info. on the project at http://www.xfce.org/
Finally this one relates to a recent thread "Should the unix fs be
hidden from desktop users?" which can be found at
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg01489.html
There is a project called newdocms that attempts to create a database of
files rather than having the user search the filesystem. It sounds allot
like what MS is proposing for the next version of Windows, but this can
already be implemented in KDE, and the guy is hoping to make ports for
Gnome and OpenOffice as well. What do you guys think of this? You can
get more information at http://m-arriaga.net/software/newdocms/

Have a good weekend,

Jesse
