The latest release is 3.1RC6 and you can check it out at > http://www.kde.org/info/3.1.html for features that made it in you can take a look at: http://developer.kde.org/development-versions/kde-3.1-features.html it probably covers a good 80-85% of what is new and improved in 3.1 (aside from bugfixes)... something that isn't on there is that many of Apple's Safari improvements have been merged into 3.1, though much will wait until 3.1.1 and the really big arch changes for 3.2 ... even now while we await 3.1 final packages, based on what is already in CVS for the next release(s) it's already apparent that KDE 3.2 and the KOffice 1.3 will both have remarkable things to offer... > The Gnome project is also very close to releasing version 2.2 of their > desktop, scheduled release date is the end of this month, as i understand it .. it's good to see that GNOME has moved to a more agressive and coordinated release schedule that emphasizes timely delivery of developments ... i do wonder about the short periods of time allowed for their RCs; they're already a few days late on deliverying RC1 (nothing unusual, though) and haven't given themselves much time for RC2 ... but schedules are written to be broken, right? ;-) esp when moving to a totally new schedule... speaking of which, i had mentioned some time back about frustrations in trying to work w/GNOME on common HCI issues. well, there is going to be an announcement in the coming weeks that will make me quite a bit happier (sneak preview: we've worked out a basic game plan to start working together, or at least in the same proximity) > Some other smaller desktops have also been very busy lately. There is no E is completely irrelevant IMHO. they're years late and suffer from a heavy desire to rewrite everything possible as slowly as possible. unfortunate, but seemingly true... > The XFCE project is also hard at work at version 4 of their desktop XFCE is cool... retro, even =) > There is a project called newdocms that attempts to create a database of > files rather than having the user search the filesystem. What do you guys think of this? You can i think it's an interesting start. the user interface to it stinks ATM, and it doesn't solve many existing problems, but it's good research IMO. and unlike most research, it can be tested and even used day-to-day by real life users. - -- Aaron J.
