Picking up on Aarons tip, when my terminal bombed out to the kde login screen, instead of logging in again, I did the ctl-alt-F1 key sequence. This time I got into the terminal mode and it did not bomb out after 30 seconds. I was able to play around for quite a while with no ill effects or surprises.
without logging in, does the same thing happen if you go to console when
the desktop manager is on screen?

Any idea on why it was doing this in the first place ?
Now to get out of the terminal mode, I've read several manuals for quite some time, and found no references anywhere on exiting the terminal. The only way I was able to do it was to do the ctl.alt.del sequence. Of course that took me right out of the picture with a reboot.
I finally found a reference to using the Alt-F7 key sequence, and found that it flipped me out of terminal mode and into kde mode. I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it though, so maybe someone can advise.
I've got to get down to Nexus and pick up that little book demo'd at the last meeting.
It's late. I'm going to bed. Thanx all.
