With the fax machine trivia I had the wrong author. I saw it on a Space channel short info-mercial that they do between shows. They were talking about the history of sci-fi. In one of his books Jules Verne predicted the fax machine was rejected by his publisher because "it was to far fetched and no one would accept it" so said the guy on the space channel. Unfortunately they don't go into details in the 60 info-mercials that they do.

So as a correction to my previous assumption the author was Jules Verne not Isaac Asimov. And I now have the info I was looking for.
