Thanks everyone. I just wanted to be certain that I wouldnt start any flame wars again with a topic that "may" not be considered specifically Linux. Just playing safe. Thats why I didnt go on with details yet. And I apologise for what sounded like a pretty snarky comment about "LINUX ONLY"....I am pretty frazzeled after almost 3 days of rebuilding my main server and every little thing that didnt work as I expected right away, just pissed me off even more thinking about how much more time I have lost with my "other" stuff.
And Roy, still cant see your email...keep getting "no text version available". Ok, clean, install of RH 7.3 Patched and erratted from redhat so postgres 7.2.3-5.73 Spent 3 days reconfiguring my server/gateway/proxy/ids etc and just left postgres unstarted, until today. Here is how I started. I went into Webmin and went to the postgres configuration area. It said it was not started/configured so I clicked "ok", "configure", whatever it was. I think I then got a request for the Administrator login and password, but it would not accept what I thought was the default of "postgres" and no password. I dont recall what I did next, but eventually I could apparently get in through webmin, and could see a template0 and template1 db's. I check the users list and there was a single postgres user with no password. Even if I run pgaccess on the local machine and try to connect to localhost, template1 with postgres and no pw, I cant connect? >From within the Webmin pg module, I can open the template1 db and I get a message "This database is not currently accepting connections, so no actions can be performed in it." And here is the bottom of my pg_hba.com local all ident sameuser host all 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 trust TYPE DATABASE IP_ADDRESS MASK AUTH_TYPE AUTH_ARGUMENT host all 192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 password And even after adding a new user with full access, I cant connect remotely with phpPgAdmin, using the postgres or new account and cant connect localy with pgaccess, either trying template0 or template1 And, my postmaster.ops file, when running, only shows /usr/bin/postmaster Shouldnt the database and other location info be in there also? Maybe the init script is not correct? And when I su to a regular user and try to run postgres command line, I get a message about "postgres does not know where to find the database......." This all seems related to the missing details in postmaster.ops?
Open Enterprise Solutions Linux & Open Source Solutions for Business Johnny Stork, BA Calgary, AB Canada www.openenterprise.ca
 ------ original message ------
From: "Aaron J.
