X 4.3 comes with a utiltiy "xrandr" that does what you want.



And for anyone playing NWN for Linux Beta (my game flavor-of-the-month): it seems the technique it uses for switching resolutions doesn't make use of the highest programmed refresh rate available (and is often one of the lower, safer refresh rates). If the resolution is at the requested one, however, it doesn't perform a change resolution call. So I use xrandr to switch down to [EMAIL PROTECTED] then start NWN. Voila! NWN at 85Hz refresh (and 30+ fps).
