The only other thing I can think of is you might be having a driver problem.
Which drivers have you tried? I think the newest printer drivers come in the
foomatic-bin foomatic-db-gimp-print packages from linuxprinting.org. From
your original message it sounds like you might have already done this but if
you have the above packages installed you should get drivers named something
like "foomatic+gimpprint" for your printer model. Try using those instead of
the "CUPS+gimpprint" drivers.
