I'm not proficient enough to help you on this Mel except to say that it is
inherently not a problem with Debian unstable. I run the latest (2.8)
version of Libranet which is mostly Debian testing & unstable and everything
works fine including cups.
Regards
Mel

Thanks again for the reply.
The driver is mostlikely fine ( same one I had running on mdk 9.1 --that
worked well). I did have and tried them all, and yes I had all those Deb
packages you asked about.
What I had in mind was different. I had been struggling lately getting the
correct working versions of things on this distro. So I would be curious
what
versions of prgms you run on your unstable ?
things like cups, samba, aptitude, apt-get.
I was fighting with it of late.
The latest samba did not work with LinNeighborhood for me, so I down graded
to
an older samba's so LinNeighborhood can brouse OK now.
I noticed one web resource suggested I put in kdelibs3-cups (from kdelibs3),
but I had kdelibs4 installed and it conflicts, so hence the fight was on.
Aptitude looks like it acts up intermittently now (never use to) giving a
SEG
FAULT (most annoying - and I loose all my changes (must start over and
over))
All I want is the latest and the greatest, plus stable, is that too much to
ask ? ;-) Hopefully I will catch on.
Thanks
Mel
