TBA kinda concerns me.
I haven't been to a meeting in well over a year, so maybe I shouldn't say
anything, but I'll make a suggestion.
Throughout the "what would be good for the newbies" thread, one repeated
thing was that people would like to see more of the basics.
Additionally, there is always a TON of praise following a presentation such
as the one on IPcop.
Some of the more active people get pretty attached to various distributions.
It would be fairly simple for someone to choose a favored distro, and demo
it.
That way, newbies would be able to compare "features" of different
distros that they may not otherwise see.
Apt-get vs Emerge vs up2date would be features that could be
compared after seeing the various distros, but not before.
This would also keep more experienced people engaged too, because most
of us (let's be honest) don't play with the various distros as often as we'd
like newbie or not, and this would be an opportunity to see what has
happened between RH 7.3 and RH 9 (for example).
We could put together a quick " demoing a mainline distro should include..."
type list. Maybe
Install a new package.
Update an existing package.
Find which packages are out of date.
Presenter's favorite feature of this distro.
Top Item on the Presenter's wish list for the distro.
Where to go for help - Forum, IRC, etc.
???
I would suggest that if this was done every second month, it would be
something that could continue indefinately. Off the top of my head, I can
think of 5 common distros (MDK, Suse, RH, Debian, Gentoo) and I'm 100%
certain there will be people thinking "you forgot about ..." and most
dostros could easily be recovered every 6 months or so. Plus, if different
people presented, there would always be something new for each presentation
even if several people both show the same distro.
I would also submit that these could also be done by a first timer themself.
"My name is Joe, and I'd like to wipe out Windows and replace it with the
distro I saw demoed a few months ago." This effectively does the same thing
as a distro demo, except that it's at an even more basic level. It also
allows someone to have their hand totally held while going through the
install.
The alternating weeks would be something focused on applications or use or
something along those lines.
I'll also make another suggestion for a topic.
"How to use Linux in your office. AKA - Linuxmanship".
I think it's worth spending a day focusing on how to "sell" Linux up the
corporate food chain at an office. This seems to be getting easier with
almost every passing day, but it's still something that would be of benefit
to some people.
As a followup (I'd suggest that it should be a 2 month session), we could
have a day for people to bring in supervisors, bosses, clients, and
co-workers so that they could sit down and test drive Linux for themself
while people were around to help them out with any questions they may have.
Following the session, they should be sent home with a copy of Cluggix, so
they can continue to test the waters in a non-committal way. Once again,
newbies benefit because they can have a look at various things, and
greyhairs can benefit by 'selling' something they love.
I also still owe a Samba session. Please let me know when would be best.
July?
Kev.
